Microsoft is reporting an impressive $1bn revenue from XBOX over the past year (to June). This income relates to XBOX Live subscriptions which accounted for 50% of the revenue.
What is more important is the other 50%. $500 m was generated by ancillary services including movies, TV shows and new content for games.
These numbers are important as they point to an important and growing revenue sector for consoles and by relation, set top box manufacturers. With the looming Social TV battle coming, key players will be looking to gain a foothold into the lucrative living room TV market. With Google’s Sony announcement and Sky’s plans for bring their box online this autumn, Microsoft is demonstrating the very real value of being in the living room.
