A look at Google's vision for the future of Social Networks

Is Facebook the new Google? Well, Google doesn’t have the obvious social network that Facebook as but Google is not resting on its laurels. Over the past week, a presentation has been widely circulated from Paul Adams, Senior User Experience Researcher at Google.

The presentation is very interesting if one assumes this is how Google is thinking about social networks. If you have ten minutes to go through these slides you will get an idea of how they are thinking.

Of particular note to me was the thought that the personal social network comprises of different sets of relationships (friends, work, old school friends) that are all connected to you but may not mix with each other. The Facebook standard for connecting effectively sticks these all together which may not always be conducive to sharing or potentially embarrassing for job seekers.

We have to draw a lot of assumptions from this presentation, but one could assume that this is the basis of thought for how Google could tackle a full social network. A lot of this makes sense, and if translated into a social network it could offer some strong USP’s. Time will tell!
